New in Forever

Last names in WoW Forever

For the first time in twenty-two years, your character carries a first name and a last name. Here is what is known, and how to build one that holds up in the lore.

What the last name changes

Until now, a taken name was lost. With a last name, the pair is what identifies you: two characters can share a first name as long as their last names differ. Name reservation opens on October 27, 2026 and runs until November 3, the day before launch; availability can only be checked then.

The known rules

  • A World of Warcraft name is 2 to 12 letters with a single capital.
  • No spaces, digits or punctuation: letters only.
  • Names of the game’s characters stay off limits, and our generator never offers them.

The rules specific to last names have not been published yet. We apply the first-name rules in the meantime, and will adjust as soon as the beta shows them.

How we build a last name

Every name is built from roots translated by hand into six languages: a head (blade, skull, storm) and a modifier (frost, blood, dawn), assembled by the grammar of the chosen language, agreeing in gender and number. The vocabulary follows the race: forge and stone for dwarves, moon and beasts for night elves, cogs for gnomes.

The same name in six languages

Blizzard translates last names: Proudmoore becomes Portvaillant in French. We follow the same logic, with the elisions, plurals and agreements of each language.

A name drawn from the trade

Real surnames often come from a craft. The generator does the same with the twelve professions of Forever: a blacksmith leans on anvil and mithril, a herbalist on leaf and dew, a fisherman on net and tide.

The Skyborne

Exiled by the Highborne and abandoned by their elemental patrons, the Skyborne are at a crossroads. Their journey begins on Zephras Isle, in Skywall. Playable in both factions: travel the Arcane road with the Alliance, or master the Elements with the Horde.

Frequently asked questions

Before reservation day

Do WoW Forever characters really have a last name?

Yes. The official @Warcraft account confirmed it on September 13, 2026: a World of Warcraft: Forever character will bear a first name and a last name, a first since the game launched.

Are these names accepted in game?

First names follow the known rules: 2 to 12 letters, no digits or spaces. Last names are always generated as a single word, with no space or hyphen, which the game will reject.

When can I reserve my name?

Early name reservation runs from October 27 to November 3, 2026, ahead of the November 4 launch. Names are first come, first served: keep a few spares.

Reserving your name in WoW Forever
Are the Skyborne available?

Yes. Blizzard has not published any Skyborne names yet, so the generator follows the announced spirit: high elven elegance and the element of Air, with no plant vocabulary. We will adjust as soon as the beta shows some.

Can two players get the same name?

The generator composes thousands of combinations. The same set only comes back through the same shared link.

What is Realmless Azeroth?

Blizzard announced a Realmless Azeroth: each playstyle (PvP, PvE, Roleplay, and Hardcore later on) shares a version of the world. Keep a few spare names ready for reservation day.
